Dear ...,

Dear Sir/Madam (or name of contact person),
-
On the 12th September 2009, human and civil rights organizations from all over the world are planning protests in their capitals.
+
a broad movement of civil rights defenders is once again calling upon everyone to participate in actions under the motto “Freedom not Fear 2009 – Stop Surveillance Mania” on Saturday, 12th September 2009. The protest is directed against the ongoing spread of excessive surveillance measures on the part of businesses, administrations and governments worldwide. With this international campaign we aim to raise public awareness of this issue and to form a broad and sustainable movement for freedom and democracy within and beyond Europe.
-
This world-wide campaign seeks to raise awareness for the need of greater freedom and democracy in Europe. We organize a protest against the security and intelligence apparatus of states, which contravene human rights by means of surveillance, data retention and biometric databases.
+
Last year over 15 countries participated in the international action day. With over 70.000 people participating Berlin witnessed the greatest protest against surveillance in German history. Currently our alliance, already consisting of more than sixty different organizations (including human and civil rights, new media, youth and religious organizations, trade unions, political parties and occupational groups) is organizing this year’s mass protest, which will take place on 12th September 2009 in Berlin.
 +
We would like to repeat and even exceed the success of last year’s international action day. In order to do so, we need your support!
-
The retention of citizen's electronic communication violates fundamental human rights, such as the right to privacy.

-
It prevents confidential communication between priests and confessors, journalists and their sources, doctors and their patients, lawyers and their clients.

-
And it does ''not'' increase the success of criminal investigations.

We have compiled an international call for action (see attachment), in which we criticize the ongoing spread of excessive surveillance measures and put forward demands directed at governments, administrations and businesses. The higher the number of organizations signing the international appeal the more people can be mobilized worldwide to join actions and protests on 12th September 2009. <br>

Please be aware that the whole campaign costs a lot of money; e.g. for Germany we estimate costs of 50-100.000 Euro. The organizations in the member states are kindly asked to strive for independent funding as money is desperately needed in every country.
