When?

17. - 19. September 2011 (Saturday till Monday)

Where?

In Brussels, Belgium.

Idea

Topic

"Freedom not fear 2011 - Defending fundamental rights in our networked world"

We say NO to data retention and PNR and we call for immediate measures and regulation of net neutrality.

Our aims

Today more than ever, European policy making is affecting our every day lives and our civil liberties in our home countries. Therefore, it is high time to show to our politicians, representatives and to every responsible person in the European institutions that we care. We we will not quietly accept directives, proposals or agreements anymore that are violating our fundamental rights as European citizens. We want to show our deepest concerns regarding the current European plans to review the data retention direcitve, to come to agreements with the US, Canada or Australia to transfer our passenger name records (PNR). We are very worried about the imminent signing of the ACTA and European projects to cut off Internet users for online infringements. The increasing number of unnecessary and disproportionate governmental surveillance measures as well as massive user data collection by companies on the Internet are more than worrying.

Therefore, we would like to offer you the opportunity to come to Brussels, join our three days project from 17th to 19th September 2011. Be part of our european weekend.

Announcement from the summermeeting 19 June 2011

The following text is part of an internal AK-Vorrat-annonuncement from June 19th, 2011. Please note: this is just the state of discussion and nothing final. Things have to be discussed - feel free to join our vision and participate!

There's a couple of people who'd like to organise a small demonstration in Brussels against data retention. [We should put our meeting under a bigger umbrella to enable groups concerned about freedom of internet to join us, too ...]

On our yearly summer meeting in Germany we had some (also controversial) discussion that led to this text.

We would like to give it a try: We want to support groups in Brussels and its surroundings who are willing to organise demonstrations. In addition, we are looking forward to gathering international experience in campaigning.

Please note that it is of big importance to us that by no means we want to compete with "Freedom not Fear" on September 10th in Berlin. Furthermore, we don't want to evoke great expectations that we won't be able to meet.

However, we want to offer more than a demonstration: It might for example be nice to stay in Brussels for two or three days in order to combine our protest with networking, becoming acquainted with other activists and having a lobbying day. That's what we have in mind and what might provide an incentive for some people to set out for Brussels.

For these reasons – no competition and the chance for people to join both the Berlin demonstration and the Brussels demonstration - we aim for Saturday, September 17th.

There are some other things we would like to point out:

  • Everyone is invited to participate in this wiki and on the international mailing list.
  • It is generally agreed that "Freedom not Fear" is no suitable slogan for September 17th because it can be mixed up with the demonstration on September 10th. Therefore, we're searching for a different slogan. Has anybody got an idea?
  • We will have a meeting on July 30th and 31st in Stade (Germany) in order to see how far we will have progressed and what the further devolopment should look like. Everyone who's interested in this project is invited to participate.
  • This is a very basic wiki page covering our attempt.
  • A lot of our ideas can be found on our summer meeting etherpad. Look for Saturday evening's and Sunday's entries (unfortunately it's only in German - we will transfer it to this wiki page soon).

Any support and every helpful idea/participation is welcome!

Concept

Our weekend is based on voluntary work done by volunteers who are working idealistically, independent and without connections to any political party or company. There will be no advertisement and no promotion from or for anyone or anything like that!

Structure

We would like to offer something more than only have a from-the-heart-coming protest march around Brussels-highscrapers.

If anyhow possible we are looking for combining the protest-day with a kind of discussion- or lobby-day with politicians and bureaucrats responsible for the rules and directives, we're complaining on.

That should give us a chance to change thoughts and concerns in direct communication. And it could open minds and horizons about what happens in Brussels at all.

We could have three days of "Freedom not fear, Brussels 2011":

It needs to be proven if we will be able to organize that all. It's up to everybody itself to make it real, to engage, to bring in your own ideas and visions ...

Saturday - day of protest

  • arriving (if that's not possible on friday)
  • preparing
  • protesting
  • having a nice evening together

Sunday - day of networking

Coming together for:

  • workshops
  • lectures, speeches
  • meetings on special topics (data retention, pnr, net-neutrality, acta)
  • handicrafs
  • pieces of culture (music, film ...)

That will only work as far as some people like to organizes one or more parts of it.

Here are some more ideas for the collective day.

Monday - day of discussion

Meeting and discussing with responsible politicians from Brussels.

Here is the place to collect proposals for people, that should be invited.
