'''This is the page to co-ordinate the European Freedom not Fear weekend in Brussels in September 2011 and to report about it.'''

''The following text is part of an internal AK-Vorrat-annonuncement from June 19th, 2011. Please note: this is just the state of discussion and nothing final. Things have to be discussed - feel free to join our vision and participate!''
+
__TOC__
-
There's a couple of people who'd like to organise a small demonstration in Brussels against data retention.

On our yearly [http://wiki.vorratsdatenspeicherung.de/Sommertreffen_2011 summer meeting in Germany] we had some (also controversial) discussion that led to this text.
+
= Join us: Freedom not Fear 2011 in Brussels =
-
We would like to give it a try: We want to support groups in Brussels and its surroundings who are willing to organise demonstrations. In addition, we are looking forward to gathering international experience in campaigning.
+
<div style="border-style: solid; border-color: rgb(255, 255, 255) rgb(170, 170, 170) rgb(170, 170, 170); border-width: 0px 1px 1px; padding: 0.2em 0.8em 0.5em; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); margin-bottom: 1em;">
-
Please note that it is of big importance to us that by no means we want to compete with "Freedom not Fear" on September 10th in Berlin. Furthermore, we don't want to evoke great expectations that we won't be able to meet.
+
[[Bild:Fnf11bxl-info-logo.png|right|80px]]
-
However, we want to offer more than a demonstration: It might for example be nice to stay in Brussels for two or three days in order to combine our protest with networking, becoming acquainted with other activists and having a lobbying day. That's what we have in mind and what might provide an incentive for some people to set out for Brussels.
+
European policy making is affecting our every day lives and civil liberties more and more. The EU is increasingly imposing unnecessary and disproportionate governmental surveillance measures on us. We will not take this any longer. Let's carry our protest into the capital of the EU!
-
For these reasons – no competition and the chance for people to join both the Berlin demonstration and the Brussels demonstration - we aim for Saturday, September 17th.
+
We invite you to join us for three days of:
-
There are some other things we would like to point out:
+
* [http://wiki.vorratsdatenspeicherung.de/Freedom_Not_Fear_2011/Brussels/day-of-protest protest (Saturday, 17 September 2011)]
-
* Everyone is invited to participate in this wiki and on the [https://listen.akvorrat.org/mailman/listinfo/akv-international international mailing list].
+
* [http://wiki.vorratsdatenspeicherung.de/Freedom_Not_Fear_2011/Brussels/day-of-networking networking (Sunday, 18 September 2011)] and
-
* It is generally agreed that "Freedom not Fear" is no suitable slogan for September 17th because it can be mixed up with the demonstration on September 10th. Therefore, we're searching for a different slogan. Has anybody got an idea?
+
* [http://wiki.vorratsdatenspeicherung.de/Freedom_Not_Fear_2011/Brussels/day-of-discussion debate with Members of the European Parliament and EU Commission staff (Monday, 19 September 2011)].
-
* We will have a meeting on July 30th and 31st in Stade (Germany) in order to see how far we will have progressed and what the further devolopment should look like. Everyone who's interested in this project is invited to participate.
+
-
* This is a very basic wiki page covering our attempt.
+
-
* A lot of our ideas can be found on our [https://etherpad.foebud.org/akv-sommertreffen-2011 summer meeting etherpad]. Look for Saturday evening's and Sunday's entries (unfortunately it's only in German - we will transfer it to this wiki page soon).
+
-
Any support and every helpful idea/participation is welcome!
+
Let us get together, meet friends from other parts of Europe and tell the EU that we won't take that continuous erosion of our fundamental rights any longer.

We had this idea with a few people since spring 2011. After the AK Vorrat summer meeting we encouraged ourselves to fix the idea.

We say NO to data retention and PNR and we call for immediate measures and regulation of net neutrality.

We would like to offer something more than only have a from-the-heart-coming protest march around Brussels-highscrapers.

If anyhow possible we are looking for combining the protest-day with a kind of discussion- or lobby-day with politicians and bureaucrats responsible for the rules and directives, we're complaining on.
+
We would like to offer something more than only have a from-the-heart-coming protest march around Brussels. We will combine the protest march with a day of networking and a day of lobbying politicians and bureaucrats responsible for the rules and directives we are complaining about. That will give us a chance to exchange thoughts and concerns directly. And it could open our minds and horizons about what is happening in Brussels exactly.
-
That should give us a chance to change thoughts and concerns in direct communication. And it could open minds and horizons about what happens in Brussels at all.
+
We will thus have three days of "Freedom not fear" in Brussels:

The non-profit organization Software Freedom International coordinates SFD at a global level, providing support, giveaways and a point of collaboration, but volunteer teams around the world organize the local SFD events to impact their own communities.

Join us: Freedom not Fear 2011 in Brussels

European policy making is affecting our every day lives and civil liberties more and more. The EU is increasingly imposing unnecessary and disproportionate governmental surveillance measures on us. We will not take this any longer. Let's carry our protest into the capital of the EU!

We invite you to join us for three days of:

Let us get together, meet friends from other parts of Europe and tell the EU that we won't take that continuous erosion of our fundamental rights any longer.

Issues

"Freedom not fear 2011 - Defending fundamental rights in our networked world"

We say NO to data retention and PNR and we call for immediate measures and regulation of net neutrality.

Full list of demands

When and where?

Supporters

Have a look at the detailed list of supporting groups - here is just nothing more than an overview:

Results

Under this banner we like to collect results, experiences, pictures and anything else, which came out of our first Brussels Freedom not fear.

We like to improve it for the next time, therefore:

Please give us feedback!

Reports and experiences

People from all over Europe protested in a demonstration. In front of the European Commission building a member of the German Working Group on Data Retention summed up the reasons to protest.

Feedback

We installed an etherpad to receive your feedback, find an intermediate result here.

Structure

We would like to offer something more than only have a from-the-heart-coming protest march around Brussels. We will combine the protest march with a day of networking and a day of lobbying politicians and bureaucrats responsible for the rules and directives we are complaining about. That will give us a chance to exchange thoughts and concerns directly. And it could open our minds and horizons about what is happening in Brussels exactly.

We will thus have three days of "Freedom not fear" in Brussels:

Saturday - day of protest

We'll have our demonstration as follows:

More information about Saturday, the day of protest

press release

Sunday - day of networking

Call it a barcamp or not - on Sunday we will have space and time for:

  • workshops
  • lectures, speeches
  • meetings on special topics (data retention, pnr, net-neutrality, acta)
  • handicrafs
  • pieces of culture (music, film ...)

More information about Sunday, the day of networking/barcamp

Monday - day of discussion

Meeting and discussing with politicians and bureaucrats in charge.

We like to change ideas, concerns and arguments.

Side events

There are some other things in life beside all protests and discussions about serious topics.

Have a look at some sideevents around the Brussels weekend or just enjoy the city itselfs.

Saturday evening - Afterhour and party at London Calling

  • Between 18:00 and 23:00, we have the basement in the popular bar "London Calling" at Place du Londres / Rue Dublin for ourselves. Bring music and good vibrations (free entry until 11pm)!
  • At 23:00, they will have a live Reggae band playing there (5 € entry after 11pm).

Saturday evening - Software Freedom day and Ubuntu keysigning party

Saturday, 17th of September is Software Freedom Day. We are thinking about having a keysigning party at the evening.

SFD is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Our goal in this celebration is to educate the worldwide public about the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in government, at home, and in business -- in short, everywhere! The non-profit organization Software Freedom International coordinates SFD at a global level, providing support, giveaways and a point of collaboration, but volunteer teams around the world organize the local SFD events to impact their own communities.

Monday to Tuesday - Brucon conference

There is also the hacker / IT security conference BRUCON ("Hacking for b33r") in BXL on Monday and Tuesday after our weekend.

Monday evening - Brucon Party

On Monday evening, there will be a party at the Havana Bar in Brussels, from 10pm onwards, and join folks from BruCON.

Line-up: - Joernchen of Phonoelit (http://www.phonoelit.org) - Mumpi of Phonoelit (http://www.phonoelit.org) - Keith Myers (http://www.myspace.com/djkeithmyers)

Cheers, BruCON crew!

Traveling and accomodation

We collected some informations to make getting to Brussels easier and to find some cheap accomodations.

Please notice that there is a limited space for a very simple, but free accomodation!
