Where?

In Brussels, Belgium.

Idea

Topic

"Freedom not fear 2011 - Defending fundamental rights in our networked world"

We say NO to data retention and PNR and we call for immediate measures and regulation of net neutrality.

Our aims

Today more than ever, European policy making is affecting our every day lives and our civil liberties in our home countries. Therefore, it is high time to show to our politicians, representatives and to every responsible person in the European institutions that we care. We we will not quietly accept directives, proposals or agreements anymore that are violating our fundamental rights as European citizens. We want to show our deepest concerns regarding the current European plans to review the data retention directive, to come to agreements with the US, Canada or Australia to transfer our passenger name records (PNR). We are very worried about the imminent signing of the ACTA and European projects to cut off Internet users for online infringements. The increasing number of unnecessary and disproportionate governmental surveillance measures as well as massive user data collection by companies on the Internet are more than worrying.

Therefore, we would like to offer you the opportunity to come to Brussels, join our three days project from 17th to 19th September 2011. Be part of our European weekend.

See also our announcement from the summermeeting 19 June 2011.

Any support and every helpful head and/or hand is welcome!

Concept

Our weekend is based on voluntary work done by volunteers who are working idealistically, independent and without connections to any political party or company. There will be no advertisement and no promotion from or for anyone or anything like that!

Structure

We would like to offer something more than only have a from-the-heart-coming protest march around Brussels-highscrapers.

If anyhow possible we are looking for combining the protest-day with a kind of discussion- or lobby-day with politicians and bureaucrats responsible for the rules and directives, we're complaining on.

That should give us a chance to exchange thoughts and concerns in direct communication. And it could open minds and horizons about what happens in Brussels at all.

We could have three days of "Freedom not fear, Brussels 2011":

It needs to be proven if we will be able to organize that all. It's up to everybody itself to make it real, to engage, to bring in your own ideas and visions ...

Saturday - day of protest

  • arriving (if that's not possible on friday)
  • preparing
  • protesting
  • having a nice evening together

Sunday - day of networking

Call it a barcamp or not - on Sunday we will have space and time for:

  • workshops
  • lectures, speeches
  • meetings on special topics (data retention, pnr, net-neutrality, acta)
  • handicrafs
  • pieces of culture (music, film ...)

That will only work as far as some people like to organizes one or more parts of it.

Here are some more ideas for the collective day.

Monday - day of discussion
