Protest march "Freedom rather than obsession with security"
Date: June 17th 2006, 2 p.m.
Location: Alexanderplatz, Berlin, Germany
The obsession with security is on the increase. Governmental agencies and corporations are registering, monitoring and controlling us ever more closely. No matter who we phone or talk to, where we go, who our friends are, what our interests are or which organisations we support - our "big brother" governments and "litte brother" corporations know more and more about it. This all-embracing surveillance entails substantial risks of abuse and error. The BND (German secret service) spy affair is only the latest proof of excessive surveillance damaging our democratic society.
Also, citizens concious of permanent surveillance and monitoring are unlikely to freely and courageously speak up for their rights and for the welfare of society. Permanent surveillance and monitoring produces an uncritical society of consumers who have "nothing to hide" and are prepared to give up their liberties in exchange for the delusion of total security. This is not the society we wish to live in. We reject the idea of pursuing security at any cost.
To protest against the obsession with security and total surveillance we will meet on June, 17th at 2 p.m. in Berlin at the Alexanderplatz. The protest march will leave the Alexanderplatz at 3.30 p.m.
We appeal to all citizens to join us in our protest. Politicans are to see that citizens are again prepared to go to the streets in defence of their privacy.
