Join us: Freedom not Fear 2011 in Brussels
European policy making is affecting our every day lives and civil liberties more and more. The EU is increasingly imposing unnecessary and disproportionate governmental surveillance measures on us. We will not take this any longer. Let's carry our protest into the capital of the EU!
We invite you to join us for three days of:
- protest (Saturday, 17 September 2011)
- networking (Sunday, 18 September 2011) and
- debate with Members of the European Parliament and EU Commission staff (Monday, 19 September 2011).
Let us get together, meet friends from other parts of Europe and tell the EU that we won't take that continuous erosion of our fundamental rights any longer.
Issues
"Freedom not fear 2011 - Defending fundamental rights in our networked world"
We say NO to data retention and PNR and we call for immediate measures and regulation of net neutrality.
When?
17. - 19. September 2011 (Saturday till Monday)
Where?
In Brussels, Belgium.
Structure
We would like to offer something more than only have a from-the-heart-coming protest march around Brussels. We will combine the protest march with a day of networking and a day of lobbying politicians and bureaucrats responsible for the rules and directives we are complaining about. That will give us a chance to exchange thoughts and concerns directly. And it could open our minds and horizons about what is happening in Brussels exactly.
We will thus have three days of "Freedom not fear" in Brussels:
- 17.9.2011: Day of protest
- 18.9.2011: Day of networking (barcamp)
- 19.9.2011: Day of discussion
Saturday - day of protest
- arriving (if not possible on Friday)
- preparation
- protest march
- spend a nice evening together

Software Freedom Day - Ubuntu keysigning party
Together with some brussels Ubuntu users we are considering having a keysigning party in the evening in the context of the Software Freedom Day.
Sunday - day of networking
Call it a barcamp or not - on Sunday we will have space and time for:
- workshops
- lectures, speeches
- meetings on special topics (data retention, pnr, net-neutrality, acta)
- handicrafs
- pieces of culture (music, film ...)
More information about Sunday, the day of networking/barcamp
Monday - day of discussion

Side events
Software Freedom day
Saturday, 17th of September is Software Freedom Day. We are thinking about having a keysigning party at the evening.
SFD is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Our goal in this celebration is to educate the worldwide public about the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in government, at home, and in business -- in short, everywhere! The non-profit organization Software Freedom International coordinates SFD at a global level, providing support, giveaways and a point of collaboration, but volunteer teams around the world organize the local SFD events to impact their own communities.
Brucon conference
There is also the hacker / IT security conference BRUCON ("Hacking for b33r") in BXL on Monday and Tuesday after our weekend.
